Once a competitive runner, always a competitive runner
I run a 25-minute loop on Sundays, the majority of which covers Battery Park City.  I hate every step.  Well, now that I’ve resurrected my iPod, I hate each step a little less.  But still, I detest running.  Once I was an obsessive runner.  It’s embarrassing, quite frankly.  And what happens when you’re the fastest is that you’re used to passing people when running.  So, 10 years after my running career ended, I revisit those memories as I sashay through Battery Park City while remaining stubborn.  Ya see, now matter how much I despise every step, I will not allow anyone to pass me.  So, when this fella in a UVA hat comes screaming past me with, oh, 10 minutes left in my trek, I pick up the pace.  Reluctantly.  Shortly thereafter, I leave the guy safely behind me and finish my gallop through lower Manhattan.  Today, I can barely walk.  Fuck me.
